Hiring an SAP EWM consultant is the search where keyword matching fails hardest. The CV says "SAP EWM" and tells you almost nothing about whether the person ran a warehouse floor or sat next to someone who did. The scarcity is structural, not a hiring-season blip, and it's getting worse.
TL;DR: EWM is an operational module, not a back-office one. The scarce skill is delivery experience, real go-lives, MFS automation, decentralized deployments, and you can't certify that into existence. A near-simultaneous SAP maintenance cliff is pushing a wave of companies onto EWM while the pool of genuine consultants hasn't grown to match. Brief on the deployment model up front and you halve the noise.
Why EWM is the SAP module that breaks a generic search
EWM breaks generic search because the difficulty is structural, not cyclical. A maintenance cliff is pushing companies onto EWM all at once: SAP ECC mainstream maintenance ends 31 December 2027, extended to 2030 at extra cost (Rimini Street, 2025). Demand spiked. The pool of consultants who've delivered full EWM lifecycles did not.
That timing matters because it stacks deadlines. Companies migrating off ECC have to decide what happens to warehouse management at the same time, and that decision drags EWM into scope whether they planned for it or not. So a fixed deadline manufactures a demand surge across the whole installed base in the same window.
The wider market is already tight. Across the EU in 2023, 57.5% of enterprises that tried to recruit ICT specialists struggled to fill the roles, rising to 68% of large enterprises (Eurostat, 2024). EWM is one of the hardest niches inside that already-tight market. In my searches, an EWM mandate behaves differently from any other SAP module: the long-list is short before screening even starts.
EWM is not MM, and the CV won't tell you which one you're getting
EWM and MM look adjacent on a CV and are not the same job. MM is master-data and procurement, a back-office discipline. EWM is warehouse execution on the floor, and it sits at the painful end of an already-tight SAP talent market.
Here's the trap. A keyword search returns anyone whose CV carries "SAP EWM," and plenty of MM consultants have brushed against EWM on a shared project. Their CV says EWM. Their actual delivery experience is master data, storage-type config at the edges, maybe some basic putaway strategies. That's not the same as owning warehouse execution against live operations.
The reason MM is easier to staff is simple. It's a back-office module, so a consultant can build real depth without ever standing in a warehouse during a go-live. EWM depth requires the warehouse floor: cutover weekends, wave management under load, exceptions that only show up when the conveyors are running. You can't desk-research your way to EWM seniority, and that single fact explains most of the supply problem.

What a genuine senior EWM consultant actually looks like
A genuine senior EWM consultant is defined by delivery, not certificates. Per SAP's own deployment guidance, high-automation, high-throughput warehouses with ASRS and MFS drive the decentralized EWM choice (SAP Community, 2024), and those are exactly the projects that forge real consultants. A certificate is not evidence. A walked-through go-live is.
What the paper version looks like
The paper consultant has the badges and the buzzwords. They list EWM, mention waves and storage bins, name-drop MFS. Ask them to walk you through a single cutover end to end and the answer goes vague fast. They were in the room. They didn't own the build.
What the real one looks like
The real one can tell you what broke at 2am during go-live and how they fixed it. They name the automation kit they integrated. They distinguish embedded from decentralized because they've delivered both, and they have opinions about when each is wrong. When I screen EWM, I stop asking about config and ask "tell me about a wave that went wrong." The paper ones can't, and the conversation ends there.
Embedded, decentralized, or Stock Room Management: your deployment changes the hire
Your deployment model is the first filter on the whole search. SAP's guidance is explicit: embedded EWM suits small and midsize, non-high-throughput warehouses, while decentralized EWM is recommended where automation and throughput are high (SAP Community, 2024). Those two profiles are different candidates, and the decentralized one is far scarcer.
Embedded EWM runs inside S/4HANA. It's the common, lower-complexity path, and the candidate pool is broader. Plenty of consultants have done embedded EWM in a midsize distribution centre. That's a real skill, but it's not the rare one, and you shouldn't pay rare-profile rates or wait rare-profile timelines for it.
Decentralized EWM is the harder hire. It runs as a separate system, it's what you choose for high-volume automated sites, and it usually comes bundled with the automation integration that makes EWM genuinely hard. There's also Stock Room Management, the lightweight successor to classic WM for basic warehouses with no automation, a different and simpler profile again.
Most briefs I get say "SAP EWM consultant" with no deployment model attached. That single missing word is the difference between a two-week search and a two-month one. Tell the recruiter which one you're running and you halve the noise before anyone reads a CV.
The automation tell: MFS, WCS, and robotics integration
MFS experience is the single biggest tell separating a paper EWM consultant from a genuine one. The Material Flow System is what wires EWM directly to conveyors, sorters and PLCs, and SAP's guidance ties it to the high-automation, high-throughput decentralized profile (SAP Community, 2024). Far fewer people have actually done it.
Why does MFS matter so much? It sits at the boundary between SAP and physical machinery, where the warehouse control system (WCS) and the PLCs live. Getting EWM to talk reliably to an ASRS or a sortation line is unforgiving work. It either runs or the warehouse stops. There's no partial credit, and there's no learning it from a course.
Demand for exactly this skill is rising structurally. The global warehouse automation market sat at USD 34.17 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 65.74 billion by 2031 at a 13.98% CAGR (Mordor Intelligence, 2025). Every one of those automated facilities needs someone who can run EWM-MFS against it.
The scarcity carries a price. Senior SAP contractor day rates in Germany run roughly EUR 700 to 1,200 per day (Whitehall Resources, 2025), and in my experience EWM with genuine MFS depth sits at the top of that band. When a client wants MFS and won't move on rate, I tell them plainly: the people who've wired EWM to a live ASRS know exactly how rare they are, and they price accordingly.
Why the legacy WM end-of-support deadline made this market worse
The maintenance cliff turned a tight market into a brutal one, and the dates matter because they signal competence to a hiring manager. For on-premise S/4HANA, SAP announced on 31 December 2025 a final transition extending Compatibility Pack usage rights from end of 2025 to the end of May 2026 (SAP News, 2025). After that, no further support.
Be precise on the rest, because the nuance is the credibility signal. LE-WM compatibility in S/4HANA terminates after 2025, while SCM EWM 9.5, the decentralized-on-SCM flavour, keeps mainstream maintenance to 31 December 2027 (SAP Community, 2024). The on-premise and cloud paths diverge sharply.
That divergence trips people up. RISE with SAP and private-cloud customers are generally cited as having a longer compatibility window for classic WM (commonly put around 2030), though the exact per-component dates should be confirmed against SAP Note 2269324. So two companies with identical warehouses can be on completely different deadlines depending on deployment. A recruiter who can't tell those apart will mis-scope your search.
Why deadlines compress the talent pool
Deadlines force everyone to move in the same window. With ECC mainstream maintenance ending 31 December 2027 (Rimini Street, 2025) and WM compatibility closing well before that on-premise, the migration wave and the WM end-of-life collide. The same scarce EWM consultants get pulled in every direction at once. Supply can't flex to meet a regulatory-style deadline, so the squeeze is mechanical.
How to brief for an EWM role so you don't waste the shortlist
Brief the deployment model first and you save the whole search. The macro backdrop is real: difficulty filling ICT roles is most acute in Germany, where roughly 80% of large enterprises struggle (Euronews, 2025). On an already-hard market, a vague brief guarantees a wasted shortlist. A precise one is most of the win.
Tell the recruiter four things up front. First, embedded, decentralized, or Stock Room Management, because that's the first filter. Second, the automation kit on the floor, ASRS, sorters, AGVs or AMRs, because it sets the MFS bar. Third, on-premise or RISE, because the deadlines and scope differ. Fourth, the actual go-live timeline, so the rate and seniority expectations are realistic.
Then screen for evidence, not buzzwords. Ask which specific automation they integrated. Ask whether they owned the MFS and PLC integration or sat beside it. Ask which deployments they actually delivered, and to walk through one go-live end to end. The paper ones run out of detail fast.
This is exactly the role where three CVs that fit beats thirty that don't.
